New weight-loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy (GLP-1 receptor agonists) are helping millions lose weight and improve health, but experts say that without smart nutrition, those results may not last.

In a rare joint statement, four leading health organizations, including the American Society for Nutrition, have released eight nutritional priorities to support patients on GLP-1s. Their message is clear: food and lifestyle changes aren’t optional extras. They’re essential.

GLP-1s are a major advancement, but not a cure-all, said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian of Tufts University. He emphasized that without proper nutrition and lifestyle support, patients may face side effects, nutrient deficiencies and long-term weight regain.

The 8 Key Nutrition Priorities

  • Start with a personalized nutrition check. Know where you're starting from.

  • Manage GI symptoms. Many patients experience nausea, bloating or constipation.

  • Focus on whole, minimally processed foods. Nutrient density matters more than ever.

  • Watch for micronutrient gaps. GLP-1s can reduce food intake — so every bite counts.

  • Prioritize protein and strength training. These help preserve muscle during weight loss.

  • Leverage food to maximize fat loss. Diet still drives much of the metabolic change.

  • Support lifestyle changes. Sleep, movement, stress management and social support are key.

  • Tailor the approach to each person. No one-size-fits-all plans here.

Research shows that combining GLP-1s with nutrition counseling leads to more sustained weight loss and better adherence, even after stopping the medication.

According to Dr. John E. Courtney, CEO of the American Society for Nutrition, medication alone isn’t enough — nutritional strategies are critical to helping patients sustain results and reduce risks.
